About Hiro

Hello, I'm Hiro Tanaka. I am a bassist from Saskatoon currently based in Toronto. After finishing my Bachelor of Music Performance at Humber College in 2023, I have worked as a freelance bassist around the GTA. I have played at many of the top venues including The Jazz Bistro, The Rex Hotel, Lula Lounge, and Manhattans Bistro. I perform regularly with the AP Big Band, Canadian Arabic Orchestra, Straats, and many other artists.

About Hiro

Hiro Tanaka is a bassist and composer from Saskatoon currently based in Toronto. Hiro picked up the bass during his junior year of high school where he quickly discovered his love for jazz. He spent time learning both electric and acoustic bass citing Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, and James Jamerson as his primary influences. He joined the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra where he honed his technical abilities under direction from world class bassist Richard Carnegie. In 2018, Hiro moved to Toronto to study music at Humber College. During his time at Humber he studied under the top jazz bassists in Canada including Mike Downes, Neil Swainson, and Jon Maharaj. Hiro was awarded the Humber Bass Faculty Scholarship in 2020 and the Lenny Boyd Memorial Award in 2023 for his facilities on bass.Known for his sense of time and groove, Hiro has made a name for himself in the Toronto music scene. He can be seen playing at venues such as Jazz Bistro, The Rex, Drom Taberna, Manhattans Bistro, The Pilot, and The Emmet Ray. Hiro has supported many musical acts including Ale Nunez, Paula Sofia, Eric Liang, Jacob Chung, The Canadian Arabic Orchestra, Straats, and the Angela Pincente Big Band.
